
GJEPC - Indo-Russia Jewellery Summit 2011
Undoubtedly, the Indian G&J industry acts as a torch bearer with the rising economic growth of the nation. Currently, the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has taken an initiative to promote bilateral trade for the purpose of tapping the untapped potential markets around the world. The first intent of the council is evident from the Indo-Russia Jewellery Summit held from 20 June 2011 to 23 June 2011 at Hyatt Regency, Mumbai. The Summit has be an effort to increase the footprints of Indian jewellery manufacturers in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States or Known as CIS countries, as there were leading retailers and wholesalers from Russia at the Summit.
It is no more a hidden fact that India is heading on its way to soon become a leading centre of gems and jewellery , as the total exports for the year 2010 have been registered to be US$ 37.14 billion as compared to US$ 25.11 billion in the earlier fiscal year. With the hosting of the summit, it is expected by the Chairman of GJEPC that nearly about 15-20% of the jewellery market can be captured, as Russia manufactures only about 21% of its jewellery and the remaining is being imported from Turkey, Itlay and China.
Big Jewelley business houses such as Asian Stars Jewels Pvt Ltd., Dimpex Jewels Pvt. Ltd., APPL, Inter Gold India Pvt Ltd., Jasani Jewellery Unit II, Poddar Diamond Pvt Ltd. participated in the summit for initiating new sourcing relationships between the two nations. Also, Alex Popov, who is the president of Moscow Diamond Bourse has also expressed its excitement to participate in the summit and has referred the summit as an excellent opportunity for particular Russian counterparts to explore the maximum potential of India’s Gems & Jewellery Industry!

Indian Gems & Jewellery Export Business Experiences Growth in 2011
Gems and Jewellery have always been as one of the most important of all Indian legacies; as Jewellery is a kind of love for all women!! It’s no more a hidden fact that the rich Indian Tradition has been symbolized by Gems and Jewellery in the international market. The demand of Indian gems and jewellery all over the globe now not only include the conventional gold, but also platinum, diamonds along with a rich variety of semi-precious and precious stones and gems.
We all know that India is known to be among the largest bullion and diamond polishing and cutting market around the globe. According to data given by Gems and Jewelley Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) the maximum growth of nearly 77 percent of in exporting of gold medallions and coins is being seen in May of US$ 1,240.24 million, which reflects a growth of 47.16% (+44.27% in rupees term). This is followed by Silver jewellery, which is reported to be US $ 44.46 million for May 2011, which shows a growth of 56.16 % (+ 53.11% in rupees term). There has been increase in the exports of cut & polished diamonds in May 11 of $ 2,221.89 million (Rs 9,976.27 crores) that shows a growth of 47.16% (+44.27% in rupees term)
With the continuous attraction of consumers towards the jewellery items as both investment and luxury fashion, it’s been known that the exports of Indian gems and jewellery has registered a high growth of nearly 33.5% (30.88% in rupees term) year-on-year to US$ 3.705.59 million (RS 16, 638.09) in May 2011. It has been possible due to the rising demand of the items from the US and UAE markets. Due to the repercussions of global crisis, the exports in 2010-11 fiscal have been only up to $ 2, 775.70 million (Rs. 12, 712.69 crores).
