As mentioned above carat which is known form of measuring the weight of diamonds is a unit of weight equal to 1/5th of a gram or 1/142nd of an ounce. The abbreviation ct is a shortened way to write carat, and refers to the weight of a single diamond. The abbreviation ct TW means carat total weight, and is used to express the total weight of multiple diamonds used in a piece of jewelry. The weight of smaller diamonds is measured in points and each point is 0.1 part of 1 carat.  Different gemstones of same weight are not necessarily of same size.

In fact larger diamonds are rare and costlier than smaller diamonds, thus 1 carat solitaire is more expensive than 1 carat general smaller diamonds.
