The word ‘gold’ clicks ‘purity’ in mind and with it Carat comes into the scene. Carat word is derivation of French word ‘Karat’ which is always symbolized by K instead of C. In 309 CE, Roman Emperor Constantine I began to mint a new gold coin solidus that was 1⁄72 of a Libra (Roman pound) of gold equal to a mass of 24 siliqua, where each siliqua (or carat) was 1⁄1728 of a Libra. This is believed to be the origin of the value of the karat. To sum up carat is the measurement unit to measure purity of gold.

What is ‘22/22 k’ in Gold?

There was a famous terminology of 22/22 k is very famous in India but the actual meaning and explanation of terminology is not known by anyone. The first 22 denotes the surface skin purity of gold and the second 22 denotes that after melting, the purity of gold jewellery will be worth 22 k. Pioneered by Nemichand & Bamalwa jewelers in Kolkata, this practice became the hallmark of gold purity and is prevalent in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Yemen, and Persian Gulf countries.

How to Calculate Value of Gold?

First gold should be separated by karats and then the separated carats should be divided with the purest known carat which is 24 k. The divided number or result has to be multiplied with the current price of gold per grams. For example, if you have an 18 karat ring that weighs 1 gram, and the price per gram is $26, then you take 18 divided by 24 and multiply your answer by 26. This gives you the price per gram of 18 karat gold, which is $19.50.

The Carat Story:

As it is world known fact that the purer gold is, costlier it gets. But no one knows that, the purest form of gold can’t be used in intact form to make jewellery as gold always needs to be mixed with some metals to boost strength which ultimately leads to the durability of gold jewellery. As pure form of gold is in semi liquid form and until it’s mixed with any other metal it can’t be molded into durable and long lasting jewellery.

Often the purity of gold is measured through carats and the ideal one is 24 K. Almost every country has announced the ideal form of pure gold in 24 K. In China it is named ‘chuk kam’ and according to World Gold Council, In China, Hong Kong & Taiwan 24 k is typical gold cartages (fineness of gold).

Here are some carats and purity related facts of gold. These standards of carats are according to European gold standards.

24 Karat Gold Jewelry, where 24 of the 24 parts are gold, 99.99% fine gold.

22 Karat Gold Jewelry, where 22 of the 24 parts are gold and 2 parts are one or more additional metals, making it 91.7% gold.

18 Karat Gold Jewelry, where 18 of the 24 parts are gold and 6 parts are one or more additional metals, making it 75% gold.

14 Karat Gold Jewelry, where 14 of the 24 parts are gold and 10 parts are one or more additional metals, making it 58.3% gold.

12 Karat Gold Jewelry, where 12 of the 24 parts are gold and 12 parts are one or more additional metals, making it 50% gold.

10 Karat Gold Jewelry, where 10 of the 24 parts are gold and 14 parts are one or more additional metals, making it 41.7% gold.

Still exceptions are always there and there are some cases where 18 k gold is worth more than 24 k and that exception of striking price differences comes when 18 k gold is embedded with platinum. As known fact, platinum costs four times more than gold.
